The drive from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Red River, New Mexico is long. No doubt about it. It is also beautiful. Along the way, you’ll see all the different kinds of landscape and there will be plenty of time for family chats. I would suggest taking some movies for the kiddos though. We got to Red River and it wasn’t long before the kids were so excited. The snow, the mountains, the friendly small town atmosphere.
It’s a great option for a lot of fun on the slopes without breaking the bank. Our cabin wasn’t far from ski school and rental. I will say this… It was so warm when we were there at the end of the season in March that the snow was pretty slushy in spots. We didn’t care. It was gorgeous and fun.
I skied from top to bottom and enjoyed every minute. The kids loved their ski school and
before the end of the week, our son had been nicknamed Eddy the Eagle and my daughter was going down some of the blues with me. I would say the so-called bunny slope seemed steep but maybe that’s a concerned mama talking.
At night we cooked in the cabin or walked down the main street in town. We learned petty quickly if we wanted to eat out to expect a wait and or try to call ahead for reservations because that’s just what happens in a small town with lots of tourists.
We made dinner and breakfast in the room but we also tried a few places not far from us so we could walk to and from the locations. There was also a grocery store that came in pretty handy but I was glad we packed the cooler and took it with us when we left the house. It allowed us to eat out of the truck sitting on the tailgate when we needed a driving break and it also saved us money. My parents used to that with us when we were kids and it was always fun.
The kids loved the deer roaming around and how people were so kind to them. They also loved the adventures of places like an oxygen bar we found and the breakfast place with a huge pancake.
We were up early every day and pretty worn out at night, but for our first snow skiing adventure as a family everyone did pretty well and somehow we got home without any injuries to speak of… Just some great stories and memories.
I was in New Mexico last year near Albuquerque and I got to ski there for the first time. Loved the experience!
That’s awesome!
