Elderberry Syrup: try at your own risk and as always check with your Doctor. Do NOT eat the berries raw as they can be deadly.

It’s Fall, and for many of us, that means allergies, which can also lead to sickness. However, it’s also cold and flu season, so ya know there’s that. Anyway, in October, something jumped on me, and I was sick for about two weeks or so. Needless to say, it was no fun, and I was so over it. I started reading about Elderberries. I even ended up asking about it on Facebook, which only made me want to learn more… and guess what? Yep, I ended up making it. If I can do it, you can do it but as always try at your own risk.

  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Cloves

  • 1/3 cup Elderberries, dried
  • 1 tbsp Ginger

  • 1/3 cup Honey,

or 1/4 cup Honey depending on how sweet you want the syrup.

I used 1/3 or even a little less and it still taste just fine. Also try to use local, raw honey.

  • 1 3/4 cups Water, pure

*Remember talk to your doctor about Elderberries before consuption and  find out what might be right for you as far as how much to take when and if it’s safe for you. Those are questions I don’t know the answers to and you must do what’s right for you.

Not long ago, I decided to look up the recipe for Elderberry Syrup. Don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of options out there, but all of them seem to list the same five or six ingredients and adjust according to the amount you want to make from scratch. It’s so easy! Combine everything but the honey in a saucepan. For this recipe, a medium-size pan will work just fine. Bring to a boil then lower the temp, so it all simmers for 45-60 minutes. You then set it the side let it cool, and smash the berries with a fork or spoon or whatever works. Next, use a strainer and strain the berries. Then add the honey and stir. I put mine in a mason jar in the refrigerator.

Now, if you want to buy the syrup and skip all that, I get it. You can find it already made at places like Walmart, Reasor’s, and Akin’s Natural Foods. I got my actual berries at Akin’s Natural Foods.  To learn more about Elderberries click here
